A man was left in critical condition after he was shot near an alley in the Washington neighborhood Sunday morning, the Long Beach Police Department said.

At around 1:06 a.m., officers heard gunshots in the area of Pacific Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway and immediately responded, police said. They found bullet casings in the area. Shortly after, police were notified of a possible victim being dropped off at a local hospital, they said.

A preliminary investigation suggests that the victim was near an alley when an “unknown number of suspects” approached and then fired at the man, police said.

The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his upper body and is in critical condition. No other injuries were reported, and the investigation remains ongoing, police said.
