Measure K was passed today, allowing the Long Beach Unified School District to buy $1.2 billion in bonds in order to repair damaged buildings, or buildings in need of maintenance.  The measure passed with a 71.3% approval, exceeding the 55% necessary for passage.  The money will be used for such improvements as earthquake and safety, restroom and classroom upgrades, and construction of new sites to ease overcrowding.

A Citizens’ Oversight Committee will oversee spending to ensure that funds are used correctly.  Funds may not be used for teacher or administrator salaries, or school operating expenses.

LBUSD officials stressed responsibility and pointed to their continued recognition as one of the nation’s best urban school districts as proof that funds would be used wisely.  Most local schools were constructed prior to 1950, and many have seen heavy deterioration.
