Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews announced this week that JetBlue will be providing a grant for $50,000 for a new Green Space Garden at MacArthur Park.

Last April, the airline held a TrueBlue points donation contest to determine where they should invest in a green space and Long Beach came out on top as the clear winner. The project, in partnership with Councilman Andrews, who submitted the proposal, and a local nonprofit, will bring urban farming to Midtown in an effort to connect more people to their food choices and healthy eating practices, according to the release.

“I am really excited to see this garden grow,” stated Andrews. “It will be a staple in the community that brings people together, and will provide fresh vegetables to those in need.”

The addition of the green space will accompany other recently added park features, including the playground and Homeland Cultural Center facility improvements, made possible by a special Park Grant, according to the announcement. The playground equipment was provided for by one-time infrastructure funds from the Office of Councilmember Andrews.

“Our customers in Long Beach demonstrated their commitment to a healthier environment and we are thrilled to add some greenery to their scenery this year,” stated Kate Wetzel, manager of corporate social responsibility at JetBlue.

The project is projected to start this summer. A build day will be planned for JetBlue crewmembers and their customers, as well as the community, to join together to make Long Beach a little bit greener. For more information call the Office of Councilman Dee Andrews at 562.570.6816.

MacArthur Park is located at 1321 East Anaheim Street.
