Police are investigating a stabbing that left a woman injured Sunday morning, the Long Beach Police Department said.

Officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Via Carmelitos regarding a stabbing at approximately 12:02 a.m. Sunday.

Upon arrival, officers found a woman with a non-life-threatening stab wound to the upper body, according to LBPD.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for her injuries.

The preliminary investigation suggests the victim got into a verbal altercation with another woman, which escalated when the suspect stabbed the victim, police said.

The suspect fled on foot in an unknown direction before officers arrived, LBPD said.

The investigation is ongoing.
