A semi-truck struck and killed a pedestrian on Pacific Coast Highway near Technology Place Thursday evening, according to authorities.

“The person stepped off the curb, in front of the truck,” said Lt. Tim Long, the police watch commander on duty. According to Long, the victim emerged from behind a parked truck in the right-most lane before being struck by the semi traveling westbound.

Paramedics quickly arrived at the scene at 5:59 p.m. but determined the pedestrian was dead, according to a fire official.

“We immediately saw that the patient was deceased,” said Brian Fisk, public information officer with the Long Beach Fire Department.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased man as 36-year-old Reginald Peralta. Medical examiners ruled his death was a suicide, according to the coroner’s office.

Police said the truck’s driver was a 46-year-old resident of Los Angeles who had a valid commercial driver’s license.

“Speed, distracted driving and driving under the influence were not considered to be a factor in this collision,” police said in a statement. “It is unknown whether the pedestrian was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
