A man who was in grave condition and had to undergo surgery after he was hit by a car on February 17 near Cal State Long Beach has died, police announced Monday.
Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) officers dispatched to the area of Bellflower and Atherton at about 6:05PM on February 17 regarding a vehicle versus pedestrian accident, said LBPD spokeswoman Marlene Arrona.
Long Beach Fire Department paramedics transported the male pedestrian, who sustained major head and body trauma, to a local hospital where he underwent surgery and was pronounced as in grave condition.
Collision investigations detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation due to the condition of the pedestrian, Arrona said.
A preliminary investigation found that the unidentified male pedestrian, who authorities believe is between 60-to-70 years old, was struck by a 2013 Mazda as he was walking westbound across Bellflower Boulevard, south of Atherton Street.
The Mazda, which was being driven by a 26-year-old Long Beach resident, was traveling southbound on Bellflower Boulevard. The driver remained at the scene, was interviewed and later released.
The pedestrian was not carrying any identification at the time of the accident and has been listed as a John Doe.
Long Beach police were notified Monday that on February 27, the unidentified man succumbed to his injuries.
The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office is working to make positive identification and notify next-of-kin, police said.
