Work to improve Shoreline Drive from Ocean Boulevard to Linden Avenue, in an effort to improve traffic circulation and ADA access to the beach has begun today, the City of Long Beach announced Thursday.

“The long-awaited traffic improvements and renovation of the Alamitos Beach Parking Lot will add to the City’s bike infrastructure, provide better accessibility to the beach and overall enhance an area that provides various special events throughout the year,” stated Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal.

Finished improvements will include new asphalt, landscaping, irrigation reconstruction, striping and signing from Ocean Boulevard to Linden Avenue in the form of a new bike lane, as well as the installation of ADA-compliant sidewalks and pedestrian ramps, with access to the adjacent beach area, according to the release.

The Alamitos Beach Parking lot will also see improvements including a new asphalt overlay, new concrete curbs and gutters and the replacement of outdated parking meters with new multi-space pay stations to allow multiple forms of payment. The island planters with trees will be enlarged by a foot to allow for drought-tolerant landscaping, and LED lights will be added alongside two new light poles to provide more lighting coverage, as was stated in the release.

Construction is expected to be completed by February. When Alamitos Beach Parking Lot closes for construction, traffic will be redirected to park at the Marina Green Parking Lot nearby.
