Years ago, a proposed $320 million development at 2nd Street and Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), involving co-developer David Malmuth’s vision of a boutique hotel, 275 residences, high-end retail, a science center, 11 acres of open space and 1,440 parking spaces to the site of the old SeaPort Marina Hotel, died twice in the Long Beach City Council Chambers.
It failed after the city council rejected the zoning and regulatory changes necessary for such an endeavor.
This Saturday, November 19, Mayor Robert Garcia is asking residents for input on plans for a new development at 2nd and PCH. A meeting is slated for the Seaport Marina Hotel’s Main Ballroom from 9:00AM to noon.
“The property owner, design team and city staff have worked really hard to respond to traffic challenges and neighborhood concerns related to development in this critical area of Long Beach,” said the mayor in a statement. “This site is now positioned to host a project that will serve the needs of the community.”
The Southeast Area Development and Improvement Plan (SEADIP) regulatory standards set in 1977, which impeded the development of the project, have since been evaluated by city staff.
SEADIP has undergone a three-year planning process, engaging the community through workshops, pop-up events, and meetings. According to the SEADIP website, technical studies have been prepared by a consultant team that will inform the new, specific plan.
The website says the latest SEADIP initiative will “take a fresh look at this area, acknowledging work conducted through previous efforts but with a new approach,” creating a plan that “maintains valuable natural resources, customizes land uses and development standards, and identifies locations for future development and expanded transportation choices.”
The Seaport Marina Hotel is located at 6400 East Pacific Coast Highway.
