With the Fourth of July around the corner, Long Beach police will be conducting a DUI checkpoint in Downtown on Saturday night between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m.

“Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with officers checking drivers for proper licensing, delaying motorists only momentarily,” the department said in a release. “When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving, which now accounts for a growing number of impaired driving crashes.”

California has had an increase of drug-impaired crashes in recent years, according to LBPD.

Even small amounts of alcohol can impair drivers taking medications, including prescription and over-the-counter, the department warned. Marijuana can also impair driving.

“DUI checkpoints like this one are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence,” the department said.

To prevent driving under the influence, police say to:

  • Decide before you go out whether you plan to drink or drive.
  • Designate a sober driver before going out or plan another safe way to get home by taxi, ride-share or public transportation. You can also look up designated driver services in your area using the National Directory of Designated Driver Services (NDDDS).
  • If you see a friend trying to drive under the influence, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get home.
  • Report drunk drivers by calling 911.
