Police say they are investigating a hit-and-run traffic collision in West Long Beach that left a bicyclist dead Tuesday morning.

Police were notified of the crash in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Harbor Avenue at around 9:16 a.m. When officers arrived at the area, they located the bicyclist unresponsive in the roadway.

Officers provided aid to the bicyclist, but he was declared dead at the scene shortly after by Long Beach Fire Department personnel. At this time, authorities have only identified him as an adult man.

Police say the man was riding eastbound on Pacific Coast Highway when he fell off his bicycle and landed in the roadway, where a passing semi-truck hit him. It’s not clear what caused the man to fall from his bicycle, authorities said.

Meanwhile, the driver of the semi-truck continued traveling eastbound on Pacific Coast Highway before possibly heading onto the northbound 710 Freeway, police said, adding that it’s possible the driver of the semi-truck didn’t notice he struck the bicyclist.

At this time, the driver of the semi-truck was not believed to have been speeding, distracted or impaired when he struck the bicyclist, police said.

Eastbound lanes on Pacific Coast Highway, from Santa Fe Avenue to Harbor Avenue, were closed for several hours due to the crash.

Editor’s note: This story was updated with more information by the Long Beach Police Department, clarifying that the man fell from his bicycle onto the roadway and then was struck by the driver of a semi-truck.
