Long Beach police shut down roads near El Dorado Regional Park Wednesday evening to investigate a suicide, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched to a shots call on the 3400 block of Kallin Avenue at about 5:42PM on Wednesday, February 10, according to Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokesman Brad Johnson. The call was then updated to a subject armed with a handgun who was threatening to kill himself.

The victim, described as an adult male, then committed suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the backyard of his residence, Johnson said.

During the investigation, Wardlow Road, between Studebaker Road and Roxanne Avenue, was closed on both directions for an unspecified period of time.

The incident occurred about two hours after an officer-involved shooting near Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and 21st Street that resulted in the arrest of one suspect.

The suicide marks the 19th shooting—including non-injuries—in Long Beach so far this year, according to Post records.

LBPD officials remind the public of available services such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which has 24/7 access at 800.273.8255. Prevention information is available through the National Institute of Mental Health website.
