In a quiet and low-key manner, Long Beach resident and Republican Steve Mozena filed his intent to run for Mayor of Long Beach. With Mozena’s announcement via Twitter on September 13, the mayoral pool now stands at a crowded ten candidates.

Mozena, the son of immigrants and a father and husband [pictured below with his daughter Arista and wife Lucille], is no stranger to politics.

His campaign proved interesting as it became Media vs. Mozena: after Howard Stern refused to air Mozena’s commercials, Mozena called it “Nazi-like exclusion” and attempted (but ultimately failed) to blast Stern online. Mozena also sent raw chickens—head and feet included—to major television news directors in an attempt to “play chicken with the media” and express his desire to “cockfight.” Mozena received .06% of the vote.

In 2007, Steve and Lucille Mozena ran for Carson City Council simultaneously, each under the slogan, “Two Mozenas are better than one!” They had hoped to score two of the three council spots that serve the City of Carson, where each voter gets to cast two votes; Mr. Mozena achieved 1.9% of the vote while Mrs. Mozena achieved 1.6%.

And in 2010, Mozena ran for Governor of California as a write-in. Using an appropriated scene from Dumb & Dumber as his website intro, Mozena advertised openly that his chances were slim but nonetheless insisted voters provide him the chance. He received 26 votes, which did not register a precise percentage.

All three of his former campaign websites are still active.

Outside of politics, Mozena advertises himself as man of many talents and interests: he’s lived as a houseboy for Berkeley sorority Kappa Alpha Theta—catering to 70 women, according to his biography—as well as serving as the hasher for Tri Delta at UCLA.

Mozena is a man of the pen as well, having written a screenplay which he says both Warner Bros. and Paramount expressed an interest in. According to Mozena, his habit of advertising himself “self-strategically [sic]” inspired the Barry Levinson-helmed cult film Jimmy Hollywood. He also published (under his own publishing company, Mozena Publishing) Anchoring America in Stormy Times: My Voyage to Discover the American Dream which is currently available on Amazon.

Mozena is also a musician and singer, who shares his and his young daughter Arista’s vocal talents in the spirit of Christmas with Daddy’s Christmas Songs.

Mozena did not return a request for comment.
