The city of Long Beach is bracing for weather-related disruptions resulting from the coming rain, including by readying sand and bags for residents fearing flooding.

“This fast-moving storm will generate a large westerly swell over the Pacific Ocean resulting in high surf conditions for beaches in Long Beach through Sunday,” a statement said about the system expected after midnight.

Rain is expected to be heavy tonight and early Saturday, with more wet weather expected Sunday night and into next week, according to the National Weather Service.

City crews have conducted inspections and performed maintenance to ensure that catch basins in flood prone areas are clear of debris and pump stations and seawall plugs are functioning, officials said. Debris booms along the Los Angeles River, the wetland mitigation site, Rainbow Harbor and the debris skimmer are up and operational.

Beach Berms have been engineered to adequate height and width as required to provide protection from flooding, and swiftwater rescue teams are preparing for possible deployment, the city said.

For residents fearing flooding, sand is available at the following locations:

  • Long Beach Public Works/Public Service Yard at 1651 San Francisco Ave., at the Esther Street Gate.
  • And both sand and sand bags are available at Fire Station 7 (2295 Elm St.); Fire Station 12 (1199 Artesia Blvd.), Fire Station 13 (2475 Adriatic Ave.), and Fire Station 14 (200 Eliot St.) and the Lifeguard Station at 72nd Place.

Sand and sand bags are available only to Long Beach residents. Residents should bring their IDs to pick up a maximum of 10 bags, and bring their own shovel or tool when collecting sand. It is illegal to pick up sand from the beaches.
