State Senator Isadore Hall, who represents parts of the South Bay and Long Beach, honored hip-hop artist Kendrick Lamar last week with the California State Senate Generational Icon Award.

When he presented the award to Lamar on May 12, Hall said Lamar’s success—from being a local Compton boy to a multi-platinum, Billboard chart-topping and Grammy Award-winning artist—was amazing for anyone, let alone a 27-year-old.

“[…]Mr. Lamar has not let his recent fame get the best of him,” he said. “Mr. Lamar is a familiar face in the neighborhood, giving back to his community that raised him.”

Lamar accepted the award before the State Senate with his fiancee Whitney Alford by his side. He thanked the senate members “from the bottom of [his] heart.”

“Being from the city of Compton, and knowing the parks that I played at, and the neighborhoods, I always thought how great the opportunity would be to give back to my community off what I do in music,” Lamar said. “[…] it’s really an honor.”

Hall posted a photo of himself and Lamar on Twitter last Tuesday:
