3:45pm | Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, has named one of the city’s most popular Mexican eateries as the 54th Assembly District’s Small Business of the Year.

“It is my pleasure to honor SuperMex, a family restaurant that embodies everything good about our community,”  Lowenthal said in a statement.

SuperMex was founded by Manuel Orozco of Villa Jiménez, Michoacán. The restaurant opened its doors in downtown Long Beach in 1974. The family restaurant specializes in authentic Villa Jiménez cuisine and has thrived thanks to its popularity among college students, who still flock to the eatery for its reasonable prices and sizable portions.

Over the years, SuperMex has expanded and opened additional restaurants in various communities across Southern California. It also has two locations in Las Vegas.

The assemblywoman lauded the eatery for its dedication to the community by contributing to local schools and sports teams through its Dining for Dollars program.

Lowenthal issued the award as part of the state’s acknowledgement of Small Business Day. This year members of the California State Legislature gathered at the Sacramento Convention Center earlier this week to honor outstanding business leaders from throughout the state.
