UPDATE  |  The suspect who was detained for attempting to carry a suspicious device into the Gov. George Deukmejian courthouse in Long Beach, which resulted in the evacuation of the building for approximately an hour and a half, has been identified.

The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) identified the suspect as Deshawn Jerry Williams, a 32-year-old resident of Long Beach. He is currently being held in Long Beach City jail without bail. 

The investigation remains ongoing. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

PREVIOUSLY: Long Beach Courthouse Re-opened After Evacuation Due to Suspicious Device

1:30PM | The Governor George Deukmejian courthouse in Long Beach has been re-opened, after a man was detained earlier today for attempting to enter the building with what police are calling a “suspicious device.” The first floor and north side of the building were evacuated during the incident.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad and HAZMAT team have left the scene after completing their investigation and finding no explosive materials, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Evacuees are currently lining up to be allowed back into the courthouse. Magnolia Avenue has been re-opened.

1:05PM  |  A male suspect was detained by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) deputies after he tried to enter the Governor George Deukmejian courthouse in Long Beach today, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD). 

According to the LBPD, at around noon today officers were dispatched to the courthouse on the 200 block Magnolia to assist deputies who were detaining a male subject. The man was trying to enter the building with several items, including what police describe as “a suspicious device.”

According to witnesses at the scene, the man may have been wearing a mask.

As a precaution, the first floor and the north side of the building are being evacuated, police said.

The LASD Bomb Squad is assisting with the investigation, which is ongoing, the LBPD said. According to a Long Beach Post reporter at the scene, an LASD HAZMAT team has also arrived.

Magnolia Avenue is currently closed to through traffic on Broadway to Third Street.
