A new hub aiming to providing access to fresh, healthy groceries to local residents who face food insecurity launched Saturday morning in one of Long Beach’s most affected low-income communities.
After speaking with Westside residents, five social work students have identified that older adults have a hard time accessing fresh produce in their area due to the lack of big-chain supermarkets, said Ariday Avellaneda, one of the students on the research team.
The report also notes that, while food insecurity—defined as having limited or uncertain access to enough affordable and nutritious food to live an active, healthy life—was trending downward prior to 2020, “deep racial and economic disparities in access to and affordability of healthy food persisted.”
Continuing their efforts to further address the needs of low-income students, Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) officials announced yesterday a new partnership with the state’s EBT/SNAP programs.
