After speaking with Westside residents, five social work students have identified that older adults have a hard time accessing fresh produce in their area due to the lack of big-chain supermarkets, said Ariday Avellaneda, one of the students on the research team.

The report also notes that, while food insecurity—defined as having limited or uncertain access to enough affordable and nutritious food to live an active, healthy life—was trending downward prior to 2020, “deep racial and economic disparities in access to and affordability of healthy food persisted.”
