A traffic collision Thursday night involving a big rig resulted in the death of a pedestrian.

At about 9:24PM, Long Beach police responded to Ocean Boulevard at the northbound 710 Freeway regarding a traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

Arriving officers discovered a 2011 Freightliner semi-tractor stopped in the #1 lane of eastbound Ocean Boulevard, just east of the northbound 710 Freeway transition, and a male subject in the gore point area of Ocean Boulevard between the eastbound and westbound lanes.

The male subject, who was found with serious injuries, was transported to a local hospital by responding LBFD paramedics, where he was later pronounced dead.

The semi-tractor was traveling eastward in the #1 lane of Ocean Boulevard, when the pedestrian tried to cross southbound Ocean Boulevard, the investigation revealed. The driver attempted to swerve, but could not avoid hitting the pedestrian and crashed into the guardrail, coming to rest in the #1 lane of eastbound Ocean Boulevard.

The semi-tractor was not pulling a trailer.

The driver, who had a valid driver’s license and insurance, was identified as a 36-year-old resident of La Puente. He was interviewed at the scene and released, according to the LBPD.

The pedestrian, who appeared to be homeless, had no identification. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office will attempt to identify the victim and notify next of kin.
