Two separate automobile accidents occurred early Saturday morning within minutes and a short distance of each other on the northbound 605 Freeway just south of Carson Street, according to the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD).

The LBFD was assisted by the Orange County Fire Authority and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) at the scene.

The first crash, reported at 1:06AM, involved a 1991 Honda Civic that crashed into the center divider and came to rest in the number two traffic lane, according to CHP Officer C. Summers.

The 21-year-old male driver was treated for minor injuries and arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, according to authorities. A 35-year old female passenger, whose identity has not been released was pronounced dead at the scene. Reports state she had been ejected from the vehicle.

The second incident was reported at 1:13AM and took place a quarter mile north of the first crash, according to authorities.

A man appeared to have collided his 1998 Ford with the center divider, disabling the vehicle between the HOV and fast lane. The man exited the car and was struck by a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta traveling northbound in the fast lane, CHP Officer C. Black stated.

The man killed was identified by the coroner as Trevor Fike, 35, of Huntington Beach.

A 37-year-old man from Bellflower who had been driving the Jetta was taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital for major injuries. A 24-year-old woman who had been sitting in the passenger seat of the Jetta was taken to Long Beach Community Hospital with minor injuries.

The California Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation of these incidents.
