The U.S. News released its 2012-2013 Best Hospitals rankings today and two Long Beach institutions were among those at the top. Long Beach Memorial Medical Center ranked #27 in California and #16 in Los Angeles Metro Area while St. Mary Medical Center ranked #29 in California and #18 in L.A.

The annual findings looked at nearly 5,000 hospitals around the country and assessed each facility based on objective levels of performance (such as patient survival rate) and structural resources (such as staffing levels). More than 700 hospitals made the rankings, which determines the best hospitals by state, major metropolitan regions and also by 16 different medical specialties such as diabetes and endocrinology, orthopedics and cancer. Each hospital is also scored for “connectedness” in embracing electronic records and patient satisfaction, which is garnered through federally mandated surveys given to recently discharged patients.

Long Beach Memorial scored as high performing in seven specialties and found patient satisfaction more than 75% of the time. St. Mary ranked in six specialties and had a slightly lower patient satisfaction.

U.S. News’ entire Best Hospitals rankings are available on their website, which features a searchable database and individual profiles on each hospital.
