High school and college students will be encouraged to register to vote next week as part of National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

City Clerk Monique De La Garza is working with Long Beach Unified School District high schools and Long Beach City College to register and pre-register as many students as possible. Students and faculty across Long Beach will be hosting events for eligible students who are at least 16.

Concurrently, the office of Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk is coordinating events at Cal State Long Beach.

“Voting is a tool that allows every citizen to make their voices heard,” Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia said in a statement.

National Voter Registration Day kits are scheduled to be distributed by the City Clerk’s Office this week to participating LBUSD high schools, LBCC and CSULB. They include posters, voter registration forms, giveaway items and information about voting rights. This year, the campaign also will include social media tools to encourage the larger Long Beach community participate in these efforts; those will be distributed by the City Clerk’s office via LinkLB.

The city last year registered and pre-registered more than 600 students, De La Garza said. This year’s goal is to surpass 750 students.

“To ensure that all sectors of our community are represented, all citizens are encouraged to exercise their right to vote this March 2020,” she said in a statement.
