Long Beach is the best city in the world. It is our diverse and passionate people that make it so great. Sometimes it is possible to find one person who exemplifies everything Long Beach has become… and will be. Help us determine who has the ability to inspire us in a direction of service, action and greatness by naming them Long Beach’s 2009 Person of the Year.

This past year has certainly been an eventful one in Long Beach. Among many other issues, the city dealt with a recession, pursued routes to improve the environment, and said goodbye to its leaders of its Police and Fire Departments. As the end of year – and the decade – comes to a close, we invite you to reflect on the past year and all of the changes and developments in 2009 that have shaped Long Beach into what it is today – and will be in 2010 and beyond.

This effort marks the third consecutive year that we will name a Person of the Year. Community activist Justin Rudd received the distinction in 2007 for his tireless volunteer work, and Olympic champion volleyball player Misty May won in 2008 for her role as an unofficial world-wide advocate for the city.

Who do you think deserves to be recognized in 2009? Who made a name for themselves this year? Who changed the city this year? Who made you take notice of their actions? We’re looking for the one person among anyone and everyone that you think should be recognized for their contributions to the city of Long Beach.

The final decision will be made by a panel of lbpost.com columnists, the managing editor and publisher. The 2009 Long Beach Person Of The Year will be announced the morning of December 9, 2009.
