The 1973 Millikan High School football team held the entire Moore League to just six points while going undefeated in league competition and winning Millikan’s first-ever Moore League football championship—a record that still holds today. Players from that year, many of whom are now policemen and firefighters in Long Beach, reminisce about the title that can’t be beat. 

Like in life, there are marriages and divorces in sports. The marriages bring in blushing new brides and grooms—Hawaii, San Diego State and, soon enough, Boise State. The divorces, well for the Big West Conference, it is a bittersweet goodbye to The University of The Pacific.

At the intersection of sports and media we noted last week that in the by gone I would track my favorite out of town teams and athletes with a phone sitting next to a radio. I got enough comments to dare a part two and peek into the future.

After 25,000 people descended onto Shoreline Drive for the 28th annual Long Beach Marathon, a San Diego woman and a Nicaraguan native took home the winning titles. 

In conjunction with all Big West Conference schools, including our own Long Beach State, FOX Sports Networks announced a major media rights agreement that will make FOX Sports West—along with Prime Ticket and FOX Sports San Diego—the exclusive broadcasters of the 2012-13 Big West sporting events.

In my sporting days back in the day, one had to be very creative and somewhat of a pest to track your favorite teams. I remember a number of years when I would call (on my regular long distance line) my pal Dr. Butler in Miami and ask him to leave the phone off the hook next to a radio or TV in his home.
