The Long Beach small business community suffered an unfortunate loss this week with the passing of Steve Mintz — the owner of Bagatelle Records.

Since 1977, the city’s oldest record store has stood on Atlantic Avenue near East Third Street with a neon musical note sign welcoming visitors. While Fingerprints got most of the attention just two blocks away, Bagatelle had a wealth of vintage vinyl from the 1950s through the ’70s.

“As the proud owner of Bagatelle Records, [Steve] lived for good music, good company, and always speaking his mind (whether you asked for it or not),” his family shared in a post announcing his passing.

One commenter on the post recounted his conversations with Steve, who would advise him on what jazz record to listen to with his dad.

“He was a wealth of great musical knowledge,” the commenter wrote.
