“TIKI HA HA” COMEDY SHOW – BAMBOO CLUB (Thursday)

A new monthly comedy series is launching this Thursday, Jan. 20 at the Bamboo Club, where five rising comedians will entertain as you enjoy a night out at the tiki lounge.

Hosted by Daniel Zambrano, this week’s lineup includes comedians Alex Hooper, Or Mash, Subhah Agarwal, Garett Ulrich and Keith Carey.

In addition to a stellar selection of tiki cocktails, the bar offers a full menu and a late-night yakitori menu served until 1 a.m.

Show is from 7-10 p.m. Tickets cost $10, dinner and cocktails not included. Click here to purchase tickets.

FREE HOT MEALS TO THE COMMUNITY – TAY ACADEMY (Thursday)

On Thursday, Jan. 20 anyone in the community is invited to snag a hot meal provided by Project CAN (Community Ambassadors Network) at the Tay Academy.

The free event, which will run from 1-3 p.m., is supported by Mental Health America of Los Angeles.

The Tay Academy is at 2025 E. Seventh St.

DALMATIAN MEET-UP – ROSIES DOG BEACH (Saturday)

Dalmatian dog owners are invited to spend an afternoon together on Saturday, Jan. 22 at Rosie Dog Beach.

Organized by Dalmatians of Long Beach, the local group is hoping to create a pup-loving community around the spotted breed, a community they hope will eventually reach 101, for obvious reasons.

The gathering is free to attend, just bring your black-and-white pooch. The group will meet at the north end of the dog beach by the water.

Rosie’s Dog Beach is at 5000 E. Ocean Blvd.

BLACK RESTAURANT WEEK – VARIOUS LOCATIONS (Sunday, Jan. 23-30)

A new restaurant week is launching in Long Beach this Sunday, Jan. 23, one that highlights Black-owned restaurants and businesses and celebrates African, African American and Caribbean fare in and around Long Beach.

Many of the 14 participating restaurants will offer deals and promotions all week long until Sunday, Jan. 30. There will also be a pop-up at 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 25 at Trademark Brewing.

SUNDAY ROLLER DISCO – JUNIPERO BEACH (Sunday)

Grab your skates and roll out to Junipero Beach Sunday, Jan. 23 from 3-6 p.m. for a free sunset skate session hosted by Pedal Movement.

The skate session is an open skate and invites skaters of any skill level to join. Groovy tunes will be provided by organizers.

ORCA EXPERT OFFERS KILLER DISCUSSION ABOUT WHALES IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA – AQUARIUM OF THE PACIFIC (Wednesday)

As part of the First Wednesdays series at the Aquarium of the Pacific, whale expert Alisa Schulman-Janiger will discuss the past, present and future for orcas that visit the West Coast each year, specifically Southern California. The most recent spotting included a pod of orcas off the local coast in December 2021.

Schulman-Janiger is the lead research biologist for the California Killer Whale Project. She is also a research associate at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the director of the Gray Whale Census and Behavior Project by the American Cetacean Society’s Los Angeles Chapter.

The free talk and Q&A titled “Killer Whales of Southern California” — capped off with a cash bar cocktail hour, music and a paint-a-fish art activity — will take place in-person and on livestream from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, in the Honda Pacific Visions Theater.
