MONDAY, JAN. 13

In case you missed open mic queen Shy But Flyy at We Can Do It! last week (the newest open mic event in town), the singer, musician, poet and spoken word artist will be hosting a bit farther north in Cal Heights at Roxanne’s Monday Night Open Mic where honesty, openness and creativity are prized. Something weighing heavy on your shoulders? This is the place to creatively express it.

Another great thing: It may be Monday, but when the clock strikes 9:30 p.m., it is not yet time to go home. Keep those tired eyes (and ears) open and stay on for Roxanne’s Monday Night Jam, where musicians from all over Long Beach alight to create unexpected harmonies.

Giving us a moment’s pause: It’s tough to let go of what you already do really well to get on another musician’s or creative person’s page, isn’t it? And it’s wild to think how often our egos keep us from discovering new things about ourselves. Maybe a jam session, or at least witnessing such a collaboration, will help us leave our egos at the door in 2020 (if not, take comfort in knowing Roxanne’s Monday happy hour is an all-day thing).

Monday Open Mic at Roxanne’s, 1115 E. Wardlow Rd., takes place from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. For more info, visit the event page here or Eventbrite here.
