Metro Los Angeles has approved and expanded funds for a massive complete streets project focusing on Studebaker Road, stretching from Los Coyotes Diagonal to Loynes Drive in East Long Beach.
Part of Measure M, Metro’s massive transportation sales tax initiative that was passed by county voters in 2016, recently gave the project a $2.5 million boost, bringing its total budget to $8.75 million.
“The Studebaker [Complete Streets project] is a project to install protected bike lanes and other traffic signal-related improvements on Studebaker, from Los Coyotes Diagonal to Loynes,” Long Beach traffic engineer Carl Hickman said. “We are in the very early stages of the project and eventually we will be providing more information to the public for review and input.”
The city is not even at the point of design yet and, according to Hickman, that effort is at least 18 months away. Once a design is complete, it will go out to the public for review.
The project will likely create one of Long Beach’s largest stretches of protected bike lanes, connecting riders from the Long Beach Town Center down through El Dorado Park and to the Los Cerritos Channel.
Studebaker Road is no stranger to bike infrastructure and controversy: After Studebaker’s first stretch of protected bike lane was installed in 2017 between Wardlow Road and Spring Street, the green bollards that protect bicyclists were so derided by the community that they petitioned to have them removed. Eventually, the city scaled them back, removing 50 percent of the bollards.
