Your mayor is a man who likes his superheroes, rappers and the Aquarium of the Pacific’s shark tank, and he proved it early on as Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia swatted softballs out of the park in the opening minutes of his 45-minute Ask Me Anything session on Reddit Wednesday morning.

Reddit users were invited to pose their questions to the mayor, and more than 80 were submitted.

Garcia took batting practice with some easy ones: “Who’s the better rich guy with no superpowers: Green Arrow or Batman, and why?”

Garcia gave the nod to Green Arrow for his generous philanthropy.

His favorite Sublime album? “Sublime.” “I play it on the jukebox at Sweetwater Saloon all the time.”

Is Mayor Garcia related to the late Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia? No, but, “I wish.”

Happily, Garcia eventually grew weary of going yard on these teed-up questions and switched to more serious stuff, like why he takes so much glee in killing puppies and kittens.

“Not true,” he said. “I love animals and have a rescue myself. I give personally to rescue groups….” He noted the decrease in euthanasia rates from more than 3,000 when he was elected in 2014, to under 1,000 last year.

He fielded a question about the parking problems in Alamitos Beach. “Those units were built years ago so it’s hard to add parking. Parking is tough in all Downtown areas and in Alamitos Beach. We are trying to increase multimodal transit option like better sidewalks, scooters, bikes and buses. In the future, I believe we will be less reliant on cars and will be able to reprogram public streets and space to serve more people.”

Garcia noted that he likes that Gov. Gavin Newsom fights back against President Trump and that Trump “deserves the smackdown.”

And for our next president? “I personally love Kamala (Harris) as she’s our senator, but I will support the Democratic nominee and do everything I can to get her or him  elected.”

Long Beach’s high tax rate was brought up by one resident, who wasn’t complaining about it—he/she just wanted some ammo to shoot down his/her whiny neighbors.

“Voters in LBC have voted yes to increase their taxes to pay for more firefighters, police, and to fix city infrastructure,” replied hizzoner. “I have supported these because I don’t mind giving more of what I have to improve our community and society. I personally, always vote yes on taxes because I believe in a fair and just distribution of our economy.”

Garcia evaded some particularly difficult questions, including ones regarding the DUI arrest of 1st District councilwoman Lena Gonzalez in 2012, when she was a member of then-Councilman Garcia’s staff; why the police department always gets the lion’s share of tax dollars; how does he keep his eyebrows looking so luscious?

Overall, it wasn’t a bad AMA for your mayor, though it’s clear that he could, and would prefer to, go on and on about matters concerning pop culture. Garcia said he knows all the words to Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice,” Louie’s makes the best burgers, he digs omelets (despite what people are saying) and the future of superhero films is rosier than the city he runs.

“We got ‘Shazam,’ ‘Wonder Woman 84,’ ‘Batman,’ ‘Suicide Squad 2’ all coming in the next couple of years. I’m stoked.”
