Men in a car opened fire on a group of people who were gathered for a vigil in the parking lot near a West Long Beach bar after midnight on Saturday, witnesses say.

The shooting occurred at 12:40 a.m. in the parking lot outside The West Cocktail Lounge on the 1600 block of W. Pacific Coast Highway, said Lt. Abram Yap of the Long Beach Police Department.

The shooting killed a 57-year-old Ontario grandmother and injured five others—all part of the same family attending the vigil—a cousin of the deceased victim said. She asked to not be identified because of the nature of the crime.

“They were just driving by,” the woman said. “First they sprayed, then they got out the car and sprayed some more.”

The vigil was for a family friend who had recently died of a heart attack in the area, she said.

“We don’t know the reason it happened, we’re not into any gangs, but I believe that it was gang members that did it,” she said. Police do not yet know if the shooting was gang-related, Officer Alvino Herrera said.

A rock band playing at The West bar had just finished their set when at least 20 shots rang out, Raanen Bozzio, a drummer with the band Mothership, said.

“As we were packing up our gear, there was some commotion and one of the bar patrons said, ‘everyone get down on the ground!'” Bozzio said. “For 15 minutes we hit the ground and it was just like ‘cross your fingers.'”

One victim, a man, ran into the bar with a bloodied mouth and face, Bozzio said.

“People came in screaming, women were screaming that shot,” Courtney Thompson, the lead singer of the band said.

Long Beach police said the grandmother died at the scene.

Paramedics transported three men to a local hospital with non-life threatening gunshot wounds to the upper torso. They also transported one woman who is now in critical, but stable condition. Another woman self-transported to a local hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to her lower torso, police said.

Crime scene tape was still blocking off various parts of the area and workers were cleaning up medical waste in the parking lot around 10 a.m. Saturday morning.

Police do not yet have a description of the suspects or know the motive for the shooting.

Long Beach has seen a recent uptick in shootings within its borders; this is the tenth shooting within a little over a week.

Police sent out an intelligence bulletin to officers in response to that rash of gunfire. The bulletin includes a briefing on a specific gang, according to a police source familiar with it.

“The Long Beach Police Department is utilizing all its resources to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors city-wide,” police said in a news release. “Patrols have been augmented in all areas of the city, providing additional officers to respond to calls for service.”

Police ask that anyone with information contact homicide detectives Malcom Evans or Robert Gonzales at (562) 570-7244.
