A 31-year-old motorcyclist died and a 16-year-old passenger was seriously injured on the Spring Street on-ramp to the northbound 405 Freeway in Long Beach Wednesday night, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Officers believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash.

According to the CHP, the crash occurred at 10:30PM Wednesday night. So Sao of Long Beach was riding his 2006 Suzuki GSX-R up the Spring Street onramp near Cherry Avenue when his bike hit a curb as he turned left, which threw Sao and the teenage boy riding with him off the bike onto the connector road.

The bike slid, caught on fire and was quickly consumed by flames. Sao and the teenage rider, who were both wearing helmets, were transferred to Long Beach Memorial, where Sao was pronounced dead. The teenager was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

“Alcohol impairment may have been a factor,” said a CHP officer regarding the crash. It shutdown three northbound lanes on the 405 Freeway for more than an hour.
