Police arrested a man suspected of murdering another man in Cambodia Town this week, the Long Beach Police Department announced in a statement Wednesday.

Long Beach resident Kontharo Kang, 53, is suspected of shooting Mathew Hak, 50, to death outside of Hak’s home on Tuesday morning.

Police said Kang arrived at Hak’s home and confronted him while outside. Kang then fired his gun, shooting Hak at least once and also shooting a residence, where no one else was found injured. Police said that Kang then fled the area in his vehicle, which was parked nearby.

Arriving on scene at around 7 a.m., officers found Hak down in the front yard of a residence, immediately began performing life-saving measures and, upon doing so, saw that Hak was suffering from at least one gunshot wound to his upper body, police said. The Long Beach Fire Department arrived and declared Hak dead at the scene.

At approximately 4:50 p.m. on the day of the murder, detectives found Kang at a relative’s home in the 2800 block of E. 63rd Street and took him into custody, according to the LBPD.

Detectives learned Hak and Kang knew each other, and they believe the motive for the killing is based on an accusation of domestic violence and an assault on Hak’s relatives.

Police said the assault was reported to the LBPD on June 10, and the domestic violence was reported on Aug. 4—both of which continue to be actively investigated incidents.

Kang was booked into the Long Beach City jail on charges of murder and is being held on $2 million bail.
