A teenage boy was shot and wounded in the Washington neighborhood Tuesday evening, Long Beach police said.

Officers were called at about 5:40 p.m to a local hospital regarding a 16-year-old boy who suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper torso, police said.

Officers determined the shooting occurred in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Pine Avenue and recovered bullet casings at the scene, according to the department.

The incident is being investigated as possibly gang-related, police said. No suspect details were available.

The incident comes as Long Beach has seen a recent surge in gun violence.

Long Beach last year saw 381 shootings across the city, which is high than the average of 232 shootings each over the last four years. Those numbers include all shootings, regardless of whether anyone was hit by the gunfire.
