A man died at a hospital after being shot late Friday night near the eastern edge of Cambodia Town, according to police, who say they’re still trying to find any suspects and determine a motive for the slaying.
The deadly shooting happened just before 10 p.m. Friday, according to police. The victim, 38-year-old Ines Rosales of Long Beach, was the fourth person shot to death in Long Beach in the span of two days. Three men were killed in two separate shootings on Thursday.
Long Beach has been experiencing a spike in shootings this year. They were up almost 60% year-over-year at the beginning of July, although the number of homicides had not spiked—remaining essentially flat.
In Friday’s shooting, police said they found Rosales wounded in the parking lot of a WSS shoe store in the 2500 block of East Anaheim Street. First responders transported him to a local hospital, where he died, police said.
A manager at the store said they were closed at the time of the shooting, so no employees saw what happened, but detectives visited the store the next day to review security camera footage.
There was packaging for emergency medical supplies still scattered in the alley adjacent to the store Saturday morning. What appeared to be a bullet hole in a nearby wall was outlined by evidence markers.
In a statement Saturday, police said they don’t believe the shooting was a random act of violence. However, the circumstances leading up to the shooting, the motive and any suspect information were not immediately known.
It was not the only shooting in Long Beach overnight. Around 2 a.m., officers also responded to a call about a man who was shot after an apparent argument, police said.
Officers found a man who had been shot in the upper body near the 3300 block of Andy Street in North Long Beach, police said.
The victim told police he was walking in the area when he was approached by an unknown man who initiated a verbal dispute that escalated to a shooting, according to the LBPD. The suspect fled the scene on foot prior to officers’ arrival, police said.
Long Beach fire crews transported the man to a local hospital where he is expected to survive from his injuries.
