A Pomona man accused of fatally shooting another man in Long Beach on Martin Luther King Jr. Day last year pleaded not guilty to all charges at a second arraignment Thursday morning, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office (LADA).

Thearath Sam, 27, also denied special allegations that he intentionally discharged a handgun, which caused great bodily injury and death, said LADA spokesperson Sarah Ardalani.

Sam is accused of fatally shooting Sambo Chhoy, 33, of Long Beach on January 20, 2014 in the area of New York Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue around 10:00PM.

Chhoy, a suspected gang member, was found with gunshot wounds to the chest and was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

Police arrested Sam, also a suspected gang member, less than a week later. The Los Angeles County charged him with one count of murder and two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon.

While Sam and Chhoy are both suspected gang members, police have said they believe the shooting stemmed from a personal dispute rather than a gang rivalry.

A pretrial hearing for Sam has been set for May 26. If convicted as charged, he faces a maximum sentence of 54 years, eight months to life in state prison, Ardalani said.
