The Long Beach College Promise (LBCP) was recently accepted as an official member of the Clinton Global Initiative Commitments to Action, officials announced Tuesday.

The LBCP—a collaboration between the Long Beach Unified School District, Long Beach City College, California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) and the city of Long Beach to increase the success of local students in early and higher education and through internships—received the honor at the 2015 CGI America meeting held June 8 to June 10.

During the meeting, LBCC and CSULB representatives led a group discussion on the LBCP and how to coordinate efforts among school districts, colleges and universities to remove barriers to educational access, according to a recent press release.

Projects and plans made as CGI America Commitments to Action must be new, specific and measurable, and address a pressing national challenge usually involving multi-agency partnerships, the release stated.

The LBCP will focus on closing the achievement gaps, and through the CGI network it will now seek national partners to further scale the educational collaboration, the release added.

Recently, the LBCP—which began in 2008— received a $5 million State of California award for Innovation in Higher Education and the 2014 James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award.

Since 2011, CGI America attendees have made more than 500 Commitments to Action, which have improved the lives of nearly 2.4 million people, according to the release.
