At the Port of Long Beach (POLB)’s fifth annual “Celebrating Education” event on Monday, 39 local college and high school students interested in pursuing careers in international trade and goods movement were awarded $54,750 in scholarships, the port announced.

The students who received scholarships attend Long Beach area high schools, Long Beach City College (LBCC) and Cal State Long Beach. Since 1993, the POLB has now awarded $775,400 in scholarships to 464 students, according to the release.

“The smartest thing we can do is develop a highly trained workforce for the fourth Industrial Revolution: innovation and technology. We are looking to young people to energize our city’s primary economic engine, and we are proud to be part of that,” said POLB Executive Director Mario Cordero in a statement.

The port also announced its incoming summer interns. During the program, high school students spend eight weeks guided by port staff mentors.

“We believe that our future leaders can be found right here in Long Beach, and we have made education outreach a priority,” Harbor Commission President Lou Anne Bynum said in a statement. “Congratulations to all of the students and scholars being honored today, and the teachers who helped them get here.”
