Authorities and bystanders rescued multiple people floating in the water after a 14-foot boat flipped upside down off the coast near Belmont Shore Saturday afternoon.

At around 3 p.m., land- and water-based lifeguards responded and found three people on top of the capsized vessel and two more already on the beach, according to Long Beach Fire Department spokesperson Brian Fisk.

No injuries were reported, he said. Authorities used two rescue boats to flip the vessel right-side up, and one of the rescue boats then towed the vessel to the Shoreline Marina rental company, he said.

Long Beach resident Doug Knox, who saw the rescue, said the group appeared to be a family, which included children.

Before authorities arrived, Knox said kiteboarders in the area took notice and hurried to the family’s aide, pulling at least two of them to shore from the boat. They also alerted authorities, who then rescued the rest from the water, Knox said.

Rescuing kiteboarder Miguel Reina Campos, of San Diego, said he saw the boat capsizing and some of the family trapped under the boat. He rushed over and saw two kids were drifting away.

He said he spoke with a woman in the water, who he said identified herself as the mother, and she told him that they didn’t know how to swim. He saw a life jacket and brought it the kids, and he and another kiteboarder used the winds to drag them individually back to the shore.

Yesterday, he said winds picked up unexpectedly, so it might have caused the capsize and “caught them off guard.”

“The experience, they will have it for the rest of their lives,” Reina Campos said.
