A man pleaded not guilty today to charges stemming from the shooting death of a man that apparently resulted from a verbal dispute in Long Beach.

Stanley Shaw, 42, from the Central Valley city of Turlock, was charged March 14 with one felony count each of murder for the Jan. 30 killing of Charles Ogletree, dissuading a witness by force or threat involving another person and possession of a firearm by a felon.

The criminal complaint alleges that Shaw was convicted in 2000 of robbery.

He was arrested by Long Beach Police Department homicide detectives—with the assistance of the Stanislaus County Special Investigations Unit—during a March 10 traffic stop in Turlock, according to Long Beach police.

Ogletree, a 42-year-old Long Beach resident, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper and lower body at a residence in the 200 block of Atlantic Avenue.

Police said last month that the motive for the killing was still under investigation, but that detectives believe the two men knew each other and were involved in a verbal dispute that escalated into a shooting.

Detectives subsequently served search warrants in Pacoima and Turlock, resulting in the discovery of evidence that allegedly linked Shaw to the crime, according to police.
