A man threw a speaker at another man at Bluff Park by Long Beach’s shoreline on Monday afternoon, according to Long Beach police.

At around 11:46 a.m., officers responded to the 2800 block of Ocean Boulevard to a battery report where they determined that the suspect approached and threw a portable speaker at the man, police said.

“Community members restrained the suspect until officers arrived on the scene and detained him,” police said. He was then transported to a local hospital by Long Beach Fire Department personnel to be held for mental evaluation, police said.

On a popular social media platform Next Door, a user posted that “a homeless man attacked people during yoga” at Bluff Park, however, it is unconfirmed whether the man was experiencing homelessness.

“This has never happened at the free yoga on the bluff,” the user wrote, “it was very scary.”

Yoga instructor Dharma Shakti said in a message with the Post that the man did not attack people, but, rather “got verbally aggressive” with an instructor leading a yoga session that day before throwing the speaker at him. It was the same speaker the instructor was mic’d up to, Shakti said.

A self-defense instructor happened to be there with her students and they immediately pinned the man on the ground before authorities arrived, Shakti said.

No injuries were reported, police said.
