A man refused to come down from a tree for more than 12 hours Sunday, police said.

Witnesses reported first seeing the unidentified man in a tree in the area of Third Street and Orange Avenue at about 11:00AM Sunday, said Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokesperson Marlene Arrona.

“The subject appeared in an altered mental state and refused to come down,” said LBPD spokeswoman Marlene Arrona.

Police did not specify how tall the tree was.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel spent hours trying to talk the man out of the tree, Arrona said, and the LA County Fire Department was called in to assist with an inflatable jump bag and ladder to provide the man a safe way to come down.

It was not immediately known if the man, who refused to identify himself, was on the influence of drugs or had a mental illness. He also was not wanted for a crime and was in the tree on his own free will.

A member of the LBPD’s mental evaluation team who spoke with the man determined he was not a danger to himself or the community.

“At approximately 11:45 p.m. the man in the tree came down on his own free will and told the officers he was ready to seek medical attention for a mental evaluation,” Arrona said.

The man was taken to a local hospital for a mental evaluation, Arrona said, and he is not being charged with any crime at this time.
