After a brief respite from a wet January, more rain is on its way to Long Beach, and it could start as early as this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

There is a 20% chance of rain before 4 p.m. today, according to the NWS, which increases to 40% after 10 p.m. There is a high chance of rain Monday, which continues through Tuesday—with possible thunderstorms.

Winds Monday night are expected to reach 20 mph with gusts as high as 25 mph, according to the NWS. On Tuesday, winds are expected to range from 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

Wednesday and Thursday will likely be partly sunny with temperature highs of 62 degrees and 69 degrees, respectively, before rain returns Saturday, and stays possibly through Wednesday, Jan. 18, according to weather.com.

Already this month, Long Beach has received 1.87 inches of rain, which is more than the last three Januaries combined, according to Los Angeles Almanac.

The higher volume is due to the “bomb cyclone” that has been hammering cities up and down the state with heavy rains. The atmospheric river was even strong enough to bring elusive waves to the city’s beaches for local surfers to enjoy.
