A crash between a motorist and bicyclist near Cal State Long Beach Sunday morning left one man hospitalized and another man dead, authorities said today.

Police said a man driving a 2018 Ford Fusion south on Bellflower Boulevard struck the curb before hitting a bicyclist, driving through an intersection and colliding with a light pole on the southwest corner of Bellflower Boulevard and Atherton Street around 8:10AM on Sunday, April 29.

The unidentified driver was approaching the intersection on the No. 3 southbound lane of Bellflower Boulevard when he began to repeatedly strike the curb of the west service road raised median, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

The bicyclist, identified as a 64-year-old Long Beach resident, was riding in the same lane and approaching Atherton Street where he prepared to stop for a red light when the motorist struck him from behind.

The vehicle then continued through the intersection, where he collided with the light pole.

The motorist was transported in serious condition by Long Beach paramedics to a local hospital where he later died.

The bicyclist sustained trauma to his upper body and was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
