Eight people were displaced Wednesday when their North Long Beach home caught on fire, authorities said.

The Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) received a call about a residential fire on the 5300 block of Locust Avenue at about 6:54PM, said LBFD spokesman Jake Heflin.

The first units arrived at 6:56PM to find heavy fire coming from behind the house, and it was determined that the detached garage was involved.

“The two-minute response time really probably saved the house,” Heflin said. “[B]ased on the closeness of the house to the garage, there was an immediate exposure problem.”

Heflin said the heat from the garage was so significant that it melted window coverings and catching the house on fire.

In addition to putting the fire out in the garage, holes had to be cut in the roof to stop the fire in the attic, and firefighters cut holes in the ceiling throughout the house to ensure the fire didn’t extend into other parts of the structure.

The fire was out completely by 7:05PM. In total, it took 25 firefighters to put out the fire, Heflin said.

Most of the damage was isolated to a corner bedroom, he said.

A total of eight residents, including five people who were home at the time of the fire, were displaced, but refused assistance from the Red Cross to find lodging, choosing to stay at a family member’s house instead. Due to the extent of the fire, the family had to stay away for at least one night.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but according to Heflin, the cause is most likely electrical.
