Yogis, soccer players and general park goers can rejoice: the Bixby Park Bluff project is complete.
No more staring longingly at those dark white lamps hanging over the newly sculpted path to the beach, wondering what they look like when glowing. No more trying to look through the chain link fence, wondering what that wonderful new lawn of green will feel like in between your toes.
The Bixby Park Bluff project involved replacing the grass and irrigation system south of Ocean Boulevard between Junipero and Cherry avenues, and adding new staircases and an ADA-accessible path down to the beach, with lighting, emergency call boxes and drought-tolerant landscaping.”Our shoreline is a landmark of the City of Long Beach, and Bixby Park Bluff is a beautiful new improvement that will increase recreational activities for the entire community along the coast,” Mayor Robert Garcia said in a written statement.
“The bluff project is a wonderful improvement to Bixby Park, making it easier for all visitors to enjoy the park and beach,” Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal said in a written statement. “In addition, the lighted staircases and path will enable residents to easily and safely access overnight parking at the Beach Parking Lot through the Community Parking Program, which we established in beach and other public lots for parking impacted neighborhoods.”
The staircases and path will also connect with the new beach pedestrian path project which when completed, will provide completely car-free access to the beach from the Downtown Shoreline Marina to 54th Pl. Signs are also being added to two historic World War II gun pads on the bluff, informing visitors of the military history of the site, so you don’t have to sit on that cannon, wondering about its significance.
Mayor Robert Garcia, Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine and the Tidelands Capital Improvement Division invite the public to the Bixby Park Bluff grand opening on Saturday, November 1, at 10:30AM. Light refreshments will be served.
