Republican John C. Goya announced this weekend he is entering the race for the 70th State Assembly District, becoming the only red candidate in a sea of blue contenders currently vying for the seat.
Currently the Chief Operations Officer of West Coast Medical Group, Goya made his bid official this past Saturday at the Long Beach Republican Women Federated meeting at the Lakewood Country Club.
Though little is known about his political platform–Goya has never run for an elected office before–his professional life revolves around risk assessment and loss prevention, having worked for industries spannign aviation to insurance, manufacturing to long shoring. His announcement emphasized a pro-business stance and stressed how his risk assessment experience will help him adapt strategies to solve problems in the 70th.
“I believe the people of California are sickened and greatly concerned, as am I, at being 49th out of 50th in business and 48th out of 50th in education–though 2nd out of 50th in educational spending,” Goya said in a statement. “We have become a less desirable state for doctors and providers to practice in and this has caused fewer choices of medical care for our citizens.”
Boasting of his lack of involvement in the “present[ly broken] government,” Goya emphasized that his hopes for voters to break party lines–after redistricting, the 70th lies in an overwhelmingly blue space–is one that is rooted in qualifications overriding party affiliation.
“As an American citizen and a resident of Long Beach it is my responsibility to campaign and safeguard the quality of life for all the people in the 70th District,” Goya continued. “I quote President Bill Clinton when I say, the future is not an inheritance; it is an opportunity and obligation.”
He will be campaigning against current 4th District Councilmember Patrick O’Donnell, former 7th District Councilmember Tonia Reyes Uranga and current Signal Hill Vice Mayor Ed Wilson.
