After experiencing technical difficulties three weeks ago, city leaders are giving their virtual public safety town hall with West and Central Long Beach residents another try this Tuesday early afternoon—now with more language accessibilities.
Residents will have a chance to speak with their council members and police about a recent uptick in crime.
Over the weekend, a man was injured after a shooting in the Washington neighborhood, a community in District 1. In the past several weeks, Long Beach has experienced multiple shootings, stabbings and violent assaults, including a fatal shooting at a vigil in memory of a man who was killed, both in North Long Beach. In Central Long Beach, a street vendor was violently attacked and robbed and two men were gunned down during a reported break-in.
While city leaders have been preparing for this town hall, some local residents have been organizing protests to stand against the neighborhood violence.
Mary Zendejas, who represents the 1st District where the street vendor was robbed, previously said in an email that she hopes to address violent crime “holistically” and invites residents to tune in. Zendejas represents parts of Central, Downtown and West Long Beach. Councilman Dee Andrews, who represents Central Long Beach, will also attend.
The crime town hall will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. via Webex, a free video conferencing program. Residents can submit questions via email before the town hall with their respective council members ([email protected] for Zendejas or [email protected] for Andrews).
