Long Beach police say they’ve found the man suspected of shooting and killing a homeless man in an alley in North Alamitos Beach two months ago.

Police arrested 48-year-old Richard Young on suspicion of murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm after a brief pursuit through the Hellman neighborhood Monday afternoon.

Officers had been looking for him in the area of Seventh Street and Rose Avenue around 2:15 p.m. when they saw him exit a building and get into a vehicle, police spokesman Brandon Fahey said.

They tried to pull him over and he wouldn’t stop, leading to a pursuit, according to the LBPD. Police said Young hit a car, kept driving and then hit another parked car, which stopped him. He then fled on foot through the neighborhood and a park and officers saw he had a gun, according to the department.

Police found and arrested Young near Eighth Street and Orange Avenue. They also found a discarded gun in a yard near Craftsman Village Park, Fahey said.

Police believe Young and the victim, 40-year-old Juan Moreno, got into some type of altercation around 4:15 p.m. on Aug. 4 before Young allegedly shot him and left him in the alley.

“Through their investigation, detectives learned the victim and suspect were involved in an altercation with each other prior to the shooting and were known to each other,” police said. It’s unclear how exactly they knew each other.

Young is being held on a $2 million bail.
