A woman died at the hospital after being shot Thursday night in the Washington neighborhood on the outskirts of Downtown.

Officers responded at 11:50 p.m. Thursday to the 1700 block of Pine Avenue where they found a woman with a gunshot wound in the upper torso, Long Beach police said.

Paramedics took the victim to a hospital, where she died, LBPD Lt. Brandon Deis said.

Friday morning, police investigators at the scene said they were investigating the shooting as a homicide. Authorities identified the victim as Dalila Williams, a 44-year-old Long Beach resident. An early investigation revealed that a male adult suspect was involved in a dispute with the victim, which escalated to a shooting, police said.

The shooting took place closer to the intersection of Pine Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway. Friday morning, there was a set of candles lit along the sidewalk nearby where the shooting occurred.

Residents in the area, who declined to identify themselves for fear of retaliation, said they’ve seen multiple people with weapons converge near the intersection at night.

On Wednesday, the same residents on Pine Avenue witnessed the end of a police car chase. Los Angeles Police Department Harbor Division officers were pursuing a felony narcotics suspect when the driver headed into Long Beach around 6:30 p.m.

The chase continued on foot, with one suspect being arrested and the other fleeing police.

Since the chase, officers were seen patrolling the streets, the neighbors said, right up until 6 p.m. Thursday evening—hours before the shooting that night. Residents felt the extra police presence didn’t deter the violence that unfolded Thursday night.

“What’s the point?” one resident said.
