A woman was shot Friday night next to Sunnyside Cemetery in what police are calling a possible gang-related shooting.

Police responded around 8:17 p.m. to the 2700 block of Orange Avenue after reports of a shooting in the area.

When officers got to the scene, they found the woman who had been shot in the upper torso and vehicles struck by gunfire.

LBPD spokesperson Allison Gallagher said an investigation revealed that the woman and the suspect were sitting in a parked car near the cemetery when the suspect shot her.

Gallagher said the woman and the suspect were known to each other but the motive for the shooting is still not clear.

Long Beach fire personnel arrived shortly after the shooting and transported the woman to a local hospital. She is expected to survive, Lt. Marcus Hodge said.

Police used yellow tape to close off an intersection between Orange Avenue and East 28th Street as they looked for evidence in the shooting. No arrests have been made as the suspect fled the area before officers arrived, LBPD said. The investigation is ongoing, Hodge said.
