For the fourth day in a row, Long Beach has imposed a curfew as protests against police brutality and the death of George Floyd continue across the county and here in Long Beach.

Later than previous days, the curfew will be in effect from 9 p.m. tonight through 5 a.m. Thursday morning, keeping in line with the countywide curfew meant to deter violence and looting that have followed more peaceful demonstrations.

Around 3,000 people flocked to Long Beach on Sunday. The protest was largely peaceful, but the day took a turn when looters and vandals spread throughout the city resulting in dozens of damaged and pillaged businesses, and multiple arrests.

In a tweet today, Long Beach police said they are aware of two planned protests: Heartwell Park in East Long Beach at 11:30 a.m. and Bluff Park in Downtown at 3:30 p.m.

The curfew means that no one can be on public streets, alleys, parks or other public places in the city. This includes traveling on foot, on a bicycle, motorcycle or vehicle, officials said. All Long Beach Transit buses will stop at 8 p.m. today.

The only people exempt are:

  • Law enforcement
  • Firefighting personnel and emergency health care providers
  • Civilians engaged in police or emergency work
  • People who need emergency care
  • Individuals traveling to and from their place of work
  • Representatives of the media
